what an oder

i just hooked up a 2 bulb 175 watt metal halide retro fit kit in the hood of my reef tank.the ballast,or starter box,is leaving a terrible oder after it starts to warm up. has anyone ran into this problem and does it go away.? the ballast is from a company called energy savers.

Keep an eye on the ballast. A bad smell usally mean that it is bad. Check for heat as they will get very hot and start to leak black shi-. Kind of a burning rubber smell. Is it attached to metal or plastic? I have seen ballasts go bad and melt plastic or even scorch wood. Could be toxic to your fish. BEWARE.

by the way rcd, the ballast is sitting in and on the acrylic stand under the tank.
