What are some tips for keeping your fish healthy?

Mine are all healthy and I'd like to keep them that way since I keep reading about ich and all these terrifying diseases. What are some good measures I can take other than closely monitoring the levels and quarantining new arrivals? I've read about liquid garlic in their food and will soon be trying that but is there anything else that is a good way to prevent outbreaks? Thanks so much

Maintain good water quality.
Optimize food quality with varied and high quality foods.
Ensure that the environmental and nutritional needs of each speciment in your tank are met.
Minimize fish stress by care planning of tank environment as well as tank mates.

k sounds good. are there any products i could put in the water that would help out? i know at the lfs they float cucumber slices in the freshwater tanks are there any other little tricks like liquid garlic added to food that have worked for people? thanks again for fast response beth
