what are they doing?

OK...these are my first clowns (2 false percs) and really enjoy them. I know when they shake real fast they are being submissive to one another. However the other day both clowns found a spot in the back corner of my tank and dug out a hole. Both have been spending alot of time there and are very protective of this area. What does this mean, if anything.?

my clowns did this wen i first introduced them they did this for like 2weeks, it made me mad cause there were a lot of sand dunces in my tank and they would also start kicking up the sand makin clouds

My clowns started doing that a month ago and they stopped but now they are still really protective about that spot. Mine have been in there for a little under a year

In some cases they could be staking out a spot to lay eggs.
