For corals, you need at least 5 watts per gallon, preferibly halides with atinics. On my 90, I have 2 250watt halides, and 2 110 watt atinics.

my question is though, why would they make a 48" light that says it is ok for corals and my size tank is the smallest a 48" would fit.
so you say i cannot have corals but the box does say so?
can i have a long tentacle anenome? or any others for a clown?
what kind of lighting is mine called? PC?
sorry for being stupid but i am trying to figure out what i can get to hold me over for 1 year til the big tank. thanks

No on the annenomie, the clown will be fine without one. As far as corals go mushrooms MAY POSSIBLY survive in there.
Your lights are called N/O which means normal output.

You might be able to keep corals in there for a short while, especially if they are placed as close as possible to the light, but they won't live for long. Corals have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, algae that requires photosynthesis to live. The zooxanthellae need enough light to keep the coral alive, and unfortunately, NO bulbs don't provide enough PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) to support the zooxanthellae.
Fluorescent bulbs scatter the PAR pretty well (and it gets worse the deeper it penetrates into the tank). The PAR from NO bulbs is just not concentrated enough to keep corals alive, except really close to the bulbs where the PAR might be enough for mushrooms or colonial polyps.

thanks for all your help
i am now currently building my own VHO set up. I am making it able to house 2 bulbs 110 watts each. what are your opinions on that?
its a step in the right direction i think

So as people will buy them...for anemones you really need metal halide...for any SPS and many LPS corals you will need metal halide...most corals receive most of their nutrients from light...anemones for the most part from light and food...
Something else to note...when looking at lighting for various corals...the above method of 5watts per gallon is an extremely vague method...the most important part of lighting regardless of watts per gallon is the amount of light penetration for a give depth...
You could get a MH light for your tank you have now...40 gallon reefs are nice to have as well as a larger tank.

Definately the right direction!
With all fluorescent bulbs, the sweet spot for PAR is right in the middle of the bulb, so keep that in mind when you're placing corals; especially the more light demanding ones.
