You can buy lace rock from some fish stores. It is porus and will turn into live rock over time in your tank.

As folks around here will tell you, I am pretty old school, and prefer my FOWLR tanks with 1 lb of rock/gallon. I then fill the empty space in the tank with fish - what a novel idea

I don't know about anybody else but I found some large, odd shaped, porous rocks in my yard. I scrubbed them all down with clean water, no soap, to get any dirt off them then bleached them in the sun for at least 2 weeks. turning them every couple of days to make sure I killed any organisms that might be living in them. Then arranged them in my tank. It's been almost 2 weeks that they've been in there and all my fish are healthy and all my water tests are good. Just sayin
