What causes this?

Typical and no cause for concern. Normally caused by micro infauna burrowing in the sand bed.

...or it may be trapped air if the sand bed is relatively new...either way there is no cause for concern.

Yes, the bed is only 5 weeks old. My new Blue Spot Jawfish has done a pretty good job of messin my bottom up, looks like he had a party last night. Kinda funny, sometimes he will be excavating and then "Whoosh" a bunch of bubbles will be released, he chases them for a second or two, even caught a few, then he burped them back out...LOL...

This will sound like a dumb question, but what exactly is micro infauna?

Tiny little critters in your sand.

I agree with that! Good picture by the way. I have that same thing in my sand bed and always wondered what caused it.

its nitrogen gases being released from the breakdown of nitrates, i got them all over, its funny to see my electric blue hermits walk around with bubbles getting caught on their claws. its normal and a sign that your tank is maturing.
