what color?

i just got some love rock which is beginig to culture. unlike my other rock it is white with some green alge like stuff growing on it with tiny specs of purple. should my rock be turning more brown and purple?
i also have a lot of hermit crabs. would they be slowing the culture process of the rock?

Mind you I have crappy lighting for the size tank I will be reffering to...When I first bought a few pieces of live rock it did not look like anything except for being tan colored. Now it is all dark greens, purples, greyish...but this took a few months before I saw anything, probably at least three to four.
