I'm kinda wondering if there are many tap water users out there. JMO, but cut the tap water use and buy RO/DI. LFS should have it for .50/gallon. If that's too much, go to the water machines at your local grocery store. Not as good, but better than tap. It's only .30/gallon.

i actually use tap water on all my reefs ive had. nothing has ever went wrong. i tried R/O water with one and it worked the same. now im not telling u to use tap water. i just have and it seems ok

That works but the one at my Publix tests out with high TDS, which makes it really crappy RO. The LFS should have it for cheap

If you have to carry enough water from the store to do a water change in a tank big enough for a crosshatch trigger; you'll need a strong back. I wouldn't automatically assume tap water is to blame; Bob Fenner says basically the same thing. Some water sources are just fine, some sources really require R.O. Fin rot is usually a bacterial infection associated with poor water conditions; usually a high nutrient load. How big is your tank? How often and how much do you change water? Exactly what are your water parameters? R.O., in itself, is not going to cure fin rot. A water conditioner certainly won't either. IMO, the right antibiotic, or just more water changes might. there just isn't enough info to offer an opinion. Please give us more to work with and maybe find some help for this magnificent fish. A pic would help also.

why would you need to condition tap water? if you are worried about chlorine, don't be. saltwater gets rid of that quickly.

My apologies. I forgot to mention RO/DI units for the home. I don't have one. I have a 55 and lug the water.

That is a very small tank for a crosshatch, or any trigger. BTW; I'm guessing you served in the Marines---Thanks!

I thought that stress coat causes your protein skimmer not to work efficently, maybe the problem is in your skimmer. And why are you conditioning your water? I just add a marine buffer.

I used tap water for many years, I used Amquel or Prime....whatever, both the same in my experience.....What are your nitrates and PH at, like Srfisher said that is usually a result of poor water conditions, not bad source water. How often are you doing water changes?....I never use stress coat.
I'm also curious how big your tank is? CCampbell had a Crosshatch and he felt his 180 was too small for the fish and the fish was stressed by the tank being too small....I've never had a X-hatch, but Campbells opionion is good enough for me.

She is in a 150 and i also have a 200 the water par. read fine like i stated earlier. My crosshatch is a Juvy 4" he resides with a 6'' harly tusk,a 6''lunare wrasse and a 2'' sixline grouper. No aggresion what so ever.Im gonna get a RO soon but i dont have one at the time,it is what it is.I do a 25% water change to each of my tanks monthly and have no problem with my water par.Well i think i answered everybody questions and thanks to the one maybe two guys who answered mine.Im preety sure i found out what the problem was,i got new, different test and a temp gauge and my temp read 84 when i try to keep it at 79 so i think that may be the problem. As for as the fin rot do you guys recommend treating for bacterial infection or see if he gets better now that temp is down?THANKS

84 is not a dangerous temp. A pic would really help, any way you can post one? If not, a description of the fin (s) would help. How many fins are affected? Happen over time, or suddenly? Any cotton-like stuff on the damaged area ? etc, etc. If you've researched this an are convinced its fin rot; I'd use Maracyn-Two. There are many opinions in this area, but I've had good results with this drug. It will also help with any secondary fungal infection.
