What do dying shrooms look like?

Put new ammonia chips and new carbon in my filter today and my hairy mushrooms are not looking so hot, One looks like it is melting and spliting. Any thoughts. I will post pics in the morn if they still look bad.

Ok i think it is spliting, anyone ever deal with this that can let me know for sure. Also it is up on the high point of the rocks is the new 400 watt halide, is it a bit much for it? used to be under 216 watt pc lights. The first pic is of the one not doing well it looks like it has two mouths with white stuff coming out, the other two are doing better than the first one.

Yeah, if you just switched to the halides, it is probably a bit shocked by the increased light. You will want to move it down some and reduce the amount of time your light is on for now and then work your way back up. Think of it this way, it would be like someone who's been inside all winter goes to spring break in Florida and spends the whole day on the beach with no sunscreen.
It also very well could be splitting. I previously had one that looked just like yours, and it would look a bit rough every now and then. It did split a couple of times too. I also remember seeing the white stringy stuff, but I don't recall if it was during the split or not.
If your is like mine, it should be pretty hardy. Just give it a break from the lights, maybe do an extra water change just to be on the safe side, but I bet it will come out looking better than ever in a few days.

Any takers on the ammonia chips (looks like small gravel) kind of got me concerned.

It is starting to look better, but it looked bad pretty evenly, almost looked like it had a hole in the middle of it. I do know that they are pretty hard to kill.
