what do you put in a refugium?

I have a skimmer, heater, sand and live rock. What else should go into one?

you can put corals, and plants into one.

the refugium is the middle part of a wet/dry filter, right? if it has bio balls in it, what is the additional benefit of putting rock and sand in? and does this go in under the bio balls, just before the water goes through the sponge and to the outflow?

No, I have the sand, live rock, and plants and shrimp in the middle section, and my heater and skimmer on one side, but my fuge is divided into three sections.
