When a mushroom is in the process of suffering/dying from a new tank mate added, what does it look like?
What does a dying mushroom look like?

different things. shriveled up, loss of color, none of these are good signs. i have even heard reports of them being BLACK...... they will eventualy disintigrate and mess up your tank if there are enough of them. what tank mate is messing with your mushrooms?

I just put in a Colt Coral about 45 minutes ago, & my Elephant Ear is not a happy camper. His mouth is very open (never seen him do this, BUT the lights went out about 1 hour before I started acclimating the Colt, so maybe that's normal??).
When I put the Colt in, it may have touched the mushroom a bit...the Colt is on a teeny piece of rock & it fell over...not sure if it touched the Elephant ear or not.
The mushroom & Colt are not near each other (the Colt is about 6 inches away...)
I have about 8 kinds of mushrooms in the tank, & the Elephant ear seems to not be happy. Others have their mouths open, but not HUGE...

how open? and how much bigger than normal? Elefant and some other types of mushrooms take very well to spot feedings. it sounds to me like he is hungary. Often they will open their mouths for food once the lights go out.

The Elephant Ear is about 5-6 inches across when it's fully opened. The mouth tonight was about the size of a pea...it was NOT open that large, but it was sticking "up" that big. The "hole" was always just a slit. I spot feed him chopped mysis shrimp 2 times a week, & he always seems to catch the other feed items on other days.
The other mushrooms also have their mouths open...they're smaller mushrooms, like 1 inchers. A few of them did have their mouths fully open, about the size of this "o". Some of them are curled up (like when they catch food)...but nothing is detatched.
I am FORCING myself to go to bed & not sit & watch the tank with a flashlight every few minutes...ugh

OK...now the Elephant Ear is totally droopy. I just watched him push out a white "tounge" type thing fom his mouth, droop even further, then pull the tongue thing back in. I'm thinking this is BAD

how big is your colt?
in one short month my colt went from a 4" dorf to a 6" munster. it must've really liked my tank or osmething

Well....everyone looks happy this morning...inflated & all...mouths are still open more than I remembered, but maybe I just didn't pay THAT close of attention to notice in the past.
The Colt is about the size of a football right now...beautiful...and I got it for $15 from someone on these boards selling off her stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This Colt is actually bigger than I wanted for my tank. Do Colt Corals do well with cutting & fragging & such?
Do they ship well? I'd love to ship some to any Katrina reef-tank victims (you pay ship, I give you Colt for free) but I don't know anything about fragging or shipping...
