Retrofit kits are for lights.
most cheap light canapoy's have 1,2 or 4 regular floresent lights (like 20, 30,or 40 watts each)
retro kits have metal halaids, power compacts, vho and a nice reflector in them. it is as light kit that fits in an existing hood.

The retrofit Metal Halide light kit I installed on my 55 gallon, included: Bulb, socket, socket bracket, wiring, ballast, and plug. I built my own canopy and installed the retrofit kit in it.

retro (prefix) to go backward
fit - to insert or adjust until correctly in a suitable state or place.
retrofit - to furnish with new parts or equipment not available at the time of manufacture.
You buy something.
You don't like it or want to upgrade it.
You buy new parts such as a "retrofit kit" that normally were not furnished with this device.
You then "go back" and "fit" these new parts into whatever it is you're upgrading.
