i've recently got a 130g and are going with the following stocklist:
1x volitans lionfish (got already)
2x clowns (got already)
1x emp angel (paid for but have not yet picked up)
1x sailfin tang
1x powder tang
1x eel
now my question is what eel should i get?
i dont want a SFE, i want it to be a larger eel, but also not so aggresive that it'll kill my other fish.
what i've been thinking of is out of these; zebra eel (most likely), goldentail, jewled, ribbon.
can some people of know a fair bit about eels lead me in the right direction of what eel to get?
thanks guys

Imo the zebra would be the best fit due to the clowns. The goldentail or jeweled would more than likely eat the clowns if the volitan does not get them first, it will eventually. If you try a ribbon, I've read that the black ones are "easier" to accept frozen. Keep an eye on the 2 tangs for aggression.

zebra eels would be the safest, but it wont look very aggressive, or cool compared to the fang-toothed eels.
If you consider the G milaris type eels (golden tail, or golden morays), they stay relatively small and wont potshot biggerfish- but all smaller fish will be potential food items.
Ribbon eels are amazing looking, but have a very poor survival record. The "ghost" ribbon eels - the white ones arent as cool looking as the blue ribbons, but do better in captivity.
However as mentioned above most likely your not going to have to worry about the clownfish- the Volitans will eat them, unless you have a live anemone for them to host- lionfish leave those clowns alone

Skate, since I know the stock list you're going with and the corals you want to try and that you want to do black sand. The white ribbon aka ghost, might not be a bad idea

Zebra eels are pretty boring though, at least the one I had was. It'd never come out except to eat, then right back in its cave. It's like it wasn't even there and from what I read, most zebras are like that, very reclusive. So I sold mine to someone locally.

any ribbon eel will be very hard to take care of. he is young and the experience level isnt there IMO. I dont want to see you waste what little money you have at your age.
You cant go wrong with a snowflake eel. They grow pretty slow and arent that big of fish eaters from most say.

i have no experience with eels so i dont think a ribbon would be a good bet, a goldentail i like the look of, the zebra i've heard about it being reclusive too, so yeh.
im 19, i mean i am young but i have enough money for this. i mean i was considering a dragon moray.
but im not going to chance a ribbon because i know it wont make it, especially with the lion not on frozen

Oh to be 19 again .
Before kids and wives and car payments and rent and school and other such stuff.
But back on topic. I would go with the SFE. They are a nice looking eel and easy to take care of as a first eel. Get your feet wet so to speak and then move up to a more aggressive eel. Besides I have seen SFE do some damadge on some frozen shrimp. lol Snatching it trigh out from under puffers and triggers

lol, 19 is good, not as good as 18 tho, 18 i was at sixth form where life was sooo easy with the advantages of being able to drive and drink (i dont drink but the fact that i can was like a major goal lol) now im at university with the most boring days ever lol.
although you guys get the advantages of being able to ride the big bikes and be able to have a car with a engine bigger than the size of a drumstick and not have insurance through the roof:L
i would kill to be able to drive a 2 litre engine without being in debt by the insurance.
ANYWAYS back onto the eels, if i were to get a SFE at around 12inches, maybe 3/4inch thick, how long roughly would it take to get to a good size? like nice and fat?
if i dont go for a SFE then im thinking zebra again lol

Try the jeweled moray or the goldentail. I have both in a 100g and they're pretty easy going till feeding time. I have a 3" huma trigger with them and surprisingly hasn't been eaten. I don't know about your clowns though, my eels have gone through about 30+ damsels.

that eel looks awesome:)
i will look into them, see which would be easier to come across, i dont want to have to wait 3months for a delivery.
yeh the clowns will be gone in about 6months anyway i would expect. otherwise they will become lunch for my lion.
all my fish atm are small, except the clowns are fully grown but still small.
so i dont want to buy an eel that is going to harrass all my fish cos their small.
the jewled or goldentails, when their small are they harder to keep? like some fish

I have owned a zebra and a SFE. Both are pretty reclusive.
El guapo was right, during feeding time my eel will free swim and will accept shrimp and silversides right from my hand, (he did slip and get my finger once, very very sharp teeth sliced me right open.) If my trigger grabs the fish before the eel, the eel will snatch it from him mouth

Mine is way fatter now than in this pic, eating either 2 silversides or 2 shrimp a day or every other
He lives with 2 damsels for over a year, no probs. Never tried to escape either, I think the more rock u have the less likely he is to wander out

yehh i may get a zebra, i havent got alot of LR because i dont want it to interfear with my lions swimming space. but i have to big mounds of LR and a pipe that runs underneath the sand into each mound.
i wouldnt mind it to wander now and again, i've got a big heavy hood and glass sliders so there isnt much chance of gettin out

I saw those at my LFS the other day. They have a dedicated tank for them with DSB and different macro algae. They're pretty funny to watch.

a 13" sand bed in this tank will cost a fortune!
and it will not allow me to have an angel and so on.
