WELCOME to the hobby and swf.com

My first recommendation is always a good book or two. A few good ones:
The Contientious Marine Aquarist by R. Fenner
The New Marine Aquarium by M. Paletta
Marine Fishes by S. Michael
And keep reading this board :)
Your test kit should include ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph tests to get you started.
You may need a powerhead for additional water flow.
Consider getting a good amount of LR (live rock). It provides a very effective bio-filter for your system and gives a natural look to your tank.
Your new system will need to be cycled before you can add livestock. Are you familiar with that?

Yes, aragonite sand is good.
Powerheads need not be hooked up to anything. They can be used just to provide current. Good water movement at the surface provides oxygen.

im new to saltwater too, but ive learned this:
aragonite sand can be added with live sand and the aragonite will eventually turn in to live sand.
basically i guess because its a lot cheaper
hopefully other people will post...
i just thought i'd put my two cents in
