What exactly is Kalk?

what is this pickling lime? can you make kalk out of pure lime mixed with water?

Pickling lime is basically what you use to pickle/preserve food. It consists of calcium hydroxide (CaOH) the same stuff they sell in fish stores under the name of Kalkwasser. It is used in our aquariums to maintain calcium and alkalinity levels. It can be dosed exactly the same by mixing 1 teasp per gallon of water and then dripping the mixture usually at night to replace evaporated water.
