I have a 29 gallon salt water reef tank set up right now. It has been going for about four months now. I want to change the filter but I need to know which one would be better for this size tank. A penguin biowheel or an emperor? And which size? Can anyone help me out on here? Thank you.

What is in the reef now including livestock and equipment?

If you are running a true reef use good quality LR, a skimmer and either a DSB or a plenum. This is all the filltration required on a REEF setup. Both filters you are asking about are good for FO not reef they increase your nitrates too high for most corals.

When I ran a 29 I used just a Prizim skimmer,65 lbs LR and a DSB. My nitrates never rose above 5 ppm.
