well you will need to cycle the tank for atleast4-6 weeks. then add LR and LS, then you will need to figure out what kind or tank you want to set up. Fish only? Aggressive tank? or a reef. Because not all fish and corals mix well. Plus if you do fish only you dotn need to buy good lights, but with corals you will need to atleast MH which is the pricey part. WEll i would look at some books and do a little reasearch. But good luck with your tank.

well MH depending on if you doa retro fit with a canopy. they run anywhere from 175- on up. but for a 100 gallon i would say you are looking for atleast 500 eeasy. Just for lights on the tank that size. I have a 72 gal and i have about 700 in to mine.

for a 100 gallon, LR you are looking at anywhere from, if you get it online cheap or buy some base rock you are looking at around $300-$400. And then LS anywhere from 100 or so. Then you need a skimmer and they run from like 200 on up for a good one. And then you really want to have a sump/fuge which you can make pretty easy with a tank under the stand. say 55 gallon would be good. And then pumps, powerheads can run around 200 or so. If you dont know much about this hobby its a very fun one but its very pricey. Hope this helps you out. Dont be like man this isnt for me but take things people say as a helping point, ALot of people on here know what they are talkign about and will help anyway they can. But you need to do reasearch on thing. also you will need to get a RO unit, salt, test kits, and a few other things just to get started.

It will be probably be a little over 3. My 95gal FOWLR with lights, a canister filter, uv sterilizer, water and rock came to be 2,800. I have normal output lights, you'll be doing a sump system, you'll need more water movement, and the lights are pretty pricey. I would say set aside like 800 for lights. You'll want to get your tank drilled and a built in overflow. Since your new to this hobby like me this is what I would do. Set up the tank, let it cycle, and get used to water changes and top offs. Since your going to need fans to keep the halides cool you'll be getting a bit more evaporation. I do a 3gal top off every other day, with the fan off at night. I would get some easy hardy fish(tank raised clowns are pretty cool) and get used to taking care of them and what not. Once you get that down and keep the water in good shape you can get all the corals you hear desires. Good Luck

Heres a list of all the stuff you'll need and general pricing (don't use this as exact I'm gonig off my tank)
Tank, stand, & canopy-800$ (drilled with built in overflow. two holes in the over flow "in& out" 2 in the tank for out)
Sump/fuge-200 or maybe more on how elaborate you make it
A decent skimmer-150-200
I would go with at least 80-90lbs of rock which could be like 400$ or you can find it less online
LS-100$
Some people use UV and swear by them, some don't, I use one and my water is perfect-300$
MH lights- I would say put aside 700 and you might be able to find them cheaper
a QT, many people don't use them, I don't because my LFS does it and I've never seen a sick fish in that store-80$ (just a 20gal tank w/ some power heads and hiding places
Plumbing-I get ripped off but I would say like 100$
And WATER. Water may sound cheap but for the intial fill up of the tank it's pricey. I get IO premixed from my lfs at 85cents per gallon. It will cost like 80$ and you always want to have RO on hand. You can either buy an RO/DI unit or you can get the reverse osmosis water from your LFS.
Your tank will come to be like 3-3.5k. I spend 10-15$ a week on my tank for water, food and what not. It may be more for a reef because of the special needs of corals. It's not a cheap hobby, I'm a kid and it took me a lot of years to save up, so cool though. Almost forgot set some money aside for the fun stuff, FISH & CORALS. Depending on what you do fish can be pricey, from 20$-200$ Most will be like 30 though, corals and anemones will also vary. Good Luck and keep us posted on how everything turns out

Almost forgot this, when your looking for fish notice the reef safe ones, those are the only ones you can get or they'll eat your corals, also I think your getting a 4ft-5ft tank, this means tangs will out grow it as an adult. Some like the kole, tang will do well.

You need to start with hardy corals. I would go with maybe a toadstool (which I really like), mushrooms, xenia, finger leather, and maybe some zoos. Later you could go with harder corals. Plus the ones I listed are relatively cheap. As for fish, I suggest going with a QT tank before I bought anything.

Actually, to be honest, you REALLY REALLY need to start out with books and reading. Then decide what you like. This is a long term process. A new tank shouldn't have fish or corals in it for quite some time. I'm not trying to be mean, but please please please read as much as you can before you really start thinking about fish.
What kind of filtration does this tank have? What are HMS lights???

^^ i think he meant MH lights.
you shouldnt even be thinking about fish for at least another month and a half to two months and corals, even a bit longer. you dont want to dump all this money into a set up and then spend even more money putting fish/corals in an unestablished tank.
