I do not know if it was admin's intention, but Sepulatian's suggestion is certainly a plausible idea. Many of the removed smilies could be taken to be very aggressive, anger-driven, and sarcastic, so I can definitely see that as a possibility.

frankly, i think the smilies r cool, but who cares if a few r gone, half we didnt need or use, i mean, whos used the cheerleader smiley in their past 100 posts? thats rite, no1. tho i do see one i havent seen any1 use,
that one is down rite pointless, and the only time ive evr seen
used is when some1s talking about something eating something else, not exactly alot
