What Happened!!!

I have 2 false percula clownfish that I have had for a few months and a bulb tip anemone that I just bought about 5 days ago. Everything has been going really good with my anemone, my clowns didn't host it yet, but it was looking really good, it found a spot to stay in and has not been moving around. My anemone released some sort of transparent stringy stuff out of its mouth that my clowns were trying to eat, my clowns were also nipping at the anemone. Anyone know why they would behave this way, and maybe know what the stuff is that it released. The stuff is sort of stringy and is caught all over my plants. My anemone is shriveled up really small also. Thanks for your help!!

Although it might be waste, it usually comes out in more of a blob type shape and solid. Not saying its not waste but something else to consider, anemones have the abiluty to reproduce sexually as well as asexually. It might of been releasing sperm into the water column.

i have 2 anenomes and when i feed them a peice of shrimp there is brown stringy stuff that comes out of them and they get really small by the next day they are open and fine again.

my condy/true percs do exactly what you described every three days. (the day after feeding). I thought that the solid blob type shape was bad (as in the simple algea they use for photosynthisis rather than waste, learn something new everyday) I use a turkey baster to remove it as it looks bad and is really easy to remove rather than let it sit in there to break down.

Typed descriptions are sometimes hard to visualize, but to me that sound like an anemone that is regurgitating its food because the chunk of food is too big.

Even the food was consumed days before this is seen? My anem only gets food no larger than its mouth every 3 days. Prob only about 1/4" square. It consumes it in less than 5 mins.

Ahhh ok I see, yea let me clarify... not solid per se, but not stringy. Its in more of a blob form although quite gelatinous and mucusy if thats a word.

I fed it the day before it happened and the food I fed it was really small, much smaller then its mouth. After it expelled the stuff, it closed up real small and then eventually opened all the way back up. slowly but surely. My clowns seemed like they were nipping at it, I thought that might be why it closed up, to protect itself. I have 2 false percula and 1 bulb tip anemone. I'm pretty positive their compatible.

I am sure you can get a more detailed answer than this, but...some clowns never host. Try to find some information on the picture method. Some people claim that showing the clowns a picture of a clown in an anemone will cause the clown to host the anemone.

IMO If they are tank bred ORA or similar place they prob wont host. If they are aquacultured or wild caught then just give them time.
It appears the fish that are tank bred seem to lose the instinct to host, I dont know why I just have seen hundreds of them at my LFS surrounded by anems and none even look twice at them. Then they get a shipment of wild caught and immediatly they are hosting..
