Is it diatoms? If so, what causes them and how do I eliminate them?

Yep diatoms ... Normal for a young tank and will pass with time.

if it is a old tank that has been set up for a while then cut down on feedings. If it is a new set up then it is normal like bigarn stated and will go away with time. just keep up on water changes.

A part of the cycle...normal and not fun to look at, but they go away with time. Now, diatoms is one of the 6 phyla of protista. The fact that the name for this algae is so broad annoys me...same with dinoflagelles. I have a question, what species is this?
