Here's what I did..
I have 55G tank with two 18W light..
got so discouraged with high price of hood and power compact...
48' double flo hood costs around $140.
48' power compact costs around $160..
I went to Home and depot in my town.
look for 48' double flo kit for 8.99..
aqurium light for $4.99
went to mypetsmart to get Blue actinc light for $22.00..
put those two bulbs and put on the top of my 55G tank......
it's perfect.....i have 80W out put on my 55G..
it costs me around $38....what a rip off from those pet store...
Problem...I need to get something cover over the flo light kit to make flo light only in tank area.......
I think i need pet store light for day light flo..which will cost me another 22.99..
i will keep you guys update.
Thanks.

Build yourself a canopy for the tank...Think of a shoebox lid made out of plywood. Then mount the lights under it.

If you make the canopy out of plywood, how do you have access to the tank? Do you build some kind of hinge? I'm working on building my own lights for my 75 also. Thanks for the help.
