hi i'm trying to set up another tank and i have a 30 gallon long....but a 29 gallon stand....the stand is 31inches long but the tank is 36...will i be ok putting it on there with a little glass sticking out over each edge?
what if i put a peice of plywood underneath or some kind of wood to support the tank evenly?
I can't afford another stand right now

I was told that you should not have your tank sitting on a flat surface....like it would be on the plywood. More chance of the bottom cracking. This may or may not be the case. Some one jump in and tell us if this is a myth. But...think about this....when you can afford a new stand, then you have to go to ALL the work to move the tank. Not fun. Maybe you can find a stand the right size by running an add. Our lfs posts stuff on a bulletin board. Or, maybe you could build your own???? Plenty of people on here probably could help you with that.

as long as the plywood goes past the edges it should be fine
just get a piece that sticks out, paint it black and screw it to your stand you have now... should work fine

My opinion is using a stand designed for anything but the exact dimensions of your tank is a disaster waiting to happen.

im not arguing with you here... but wouldnt it seem ok that the same weight distributed evenly would be ok

It would seem that the important points in stand physics are:
1- The tank be fully supported with no parts of the tank overhanging the stand (which was corrected with plywood).
2- The base of the stand be the same dimensions as the top as the stand, or wider.
3- There are "ridges" on the stand that keep the tank from sliding in any direction.
