I'll take a shot. A fuge or refugium is a tank attached to your display that adds extra water volume to the system. It also acts as a place to harbor life that you do not necessarily want in your display but wish to have for some reason. This life could be macro algae to aid in nutrient export, a safe haven to allow for the increase in population of copepods, amphipods, or perhaps things not wanted in the display but cool anyway. Like aggressive crabs etc.
