What is a "Refugium"?

I just asked what's the best type of water pump to set one up. I am planning to add one to my system because of it's non-mechanical filtration, plus I can feed my fish the algae as it grows.

The (net) effect is to increase the diversity of the whole system beyond that possible with a single tank of similar size."
Again, a lot of people use it to help keep down nitrates. I hope this helps.
