Yay! One I can answer...
A refugium is, as the name implies, a place for refuge from the main tank where you can grow beneficial plants and/or house inhabitants that would otherwise get eaten (or eat others) in the display tank, usually shrimp, snails, or other non-fish.
Check out the <a href="http://www.wetwebmedia.com/refugium.htm" target="_blank">WetWebMedia Refugium Page</a> for alot more information.
A refugium also adds more water volume to the tank, which is generally a good thing. We have a 110gal tank that had a trickle bio-ball filter that was recently converted to a refugium. It was given a DSB and some caulerpa and all is well.
Try the link for lots more info; also do a search here for refugium and you'll find plenty. This site and wetwebmedia were our primary sources of information when researching the refugium project.
Good luck.
