what is a sump?

What is a sump? All I know is that the water goes into it from the tank and back in... How much would it cost? I already have a 10 gallon tank, so scratch that off things I need to make one... it would be a 55 gallon tank I would put it on. and where does the sump go, on the bottom?

yes it gose on the bottm. the sump is used to hide the equitment
