It is a filter system. I made mine for my 55 from a 20 gallon tank. There is an overflow box on the tank, which siphons the water down to the sump. Once it hits the sump, it goes down through a vertical pile of bioballs suspended off of the bottom of the tank, then flows through a secondary sponge, ans to the return pump. This then pumps it back to the tank. This is a VERY basic theorey of what a sump does. Try searching the postsa for the word sump, and you should find some good stuff. If not search yashoo or something. Good luck, If you need more details I could tell you no prob, just let me know,

What size sump would you recommend for a 55 gallon tank?
Where is a good place to go or a good book on building sumps?
Where can you find easy setup instructions and building instructions? Is there a place that shows you how drill a tank? Also, where can you get the supplies, do they sell package deals?

I would take my tank to a glass shop to get it drilled. Too much risk in my opinion to DIY. I built my sump for a 55 from a 20H. Good luck

Your sump should be a big as possible which usually means as big as you can fit under your tank. A 30L or a 20 would fit well under a 55. The cheapest and easiest way to build a sump is to find a rubbermaid container that fits under your tank and use that. check out Brommer's site for an excellet example:

Most supplies that you would need for a sump can be found at the Home depot or a plumbing supply store. Do a search on drilling glass and you should find some good info, but you may want to have a LFS or glass supply store do it. If you have the water run directly into the sump and use a submersible return pump you don't have to drill any holes.
If you don't feel like making the sump there are many places to buy one. I use one from Lifereef.com and love it.
