what is an overflow box

I saw in the "trade" section that someone is selling an "overflow box"......so here i go with another beginner question....what is an overflow box and what purpose does it serve??????

An overflow box maintains a siphon from your tank to your sump or wet/dry filter...it is what brings the tank water to the filter...it is usually measured in gallons per hour...

Thanks - as you can tell I do not use that type of filter on my tank. I'll look into more info......thanks

here's what they look like if you're interested :)
the one on the back is a dual 1"
the one on the side is a single 1"

:) yes the Lifereef dual on the back was being installed that day, and didn't have either of the two U tubes. It was not in service yet. The single tube overflow was still operational.
