what is an overflow box

I saw in the "trade" section that someone is selling an "overflow box"......so here i go with another beginner question....what is an overflow box and what purpose does it serve??????

An overflow box maintains a siphon from your tank to your sump or wet/dry filter...it is what brings the tank water to the filter...it is usually measured in gallons per hour...

Thanks - as you can tell I do not use that type of filter on my tank. I'll look into more info......thanks

yes the Lifereef dual on the back was being installed that day, and didn't have either of the two U tubes. It was not in service yet. The single tube overflow was still operational.
