what is eggcrate... and will it stop eels and firefish from getting out????

i currently have glass tops on my tank... but i plan on upgrading to mh soon...
ive read that glass traps the heat in and also reduces the light penetration.. which i dont understand.
but my question is, what is eggcrate and will it stop my eel and firefish from getting out yet allowing maximum light penetration?

Use the search function and you'll find old posting with a picture. I'll give you a clue, it is NOT what you buy eggs from the grocery store in.

Eels will get out but it stops most jumpers from carpet surfing.
