fuge is short for refugium. a refugium is a place where you allow alge to grwo, macralgae that is. Algae lives on nitrates which is bad for fish. So having a refugium with macroalgae in it, helps to take the nitrates out of your water. Chaeto is a type of macroalgae.

there are many purposes for fuges. many people jsut have realy big ones which act as a sump. This increases your water volume so your fish will not have as hard of a time if something goes wrong. You can also put in live rock to break down organics and other bad stuff. Once again, if you have one that is big enough, you could put in injured fish or corals until they get better.
