Hi all: I have a 55 gal reeg/fish set up and I just installed a new lighting system in it using t-5 lights. I previously had a red algae attack but by using red slime remover along with a good vacuming the problem diaaspeared. I started a colony of green pea size algea clusters groeing all over but by removing most rocks and scraping off the offenders as much as possible along with a thourough vacuming .solved this problem, but now I have green hairy, fuzzy algae growing on the rocks. This green algae grows to about one inch long and no clams, crabs or even the lawnmower blennie won't eat it. I use di water with every water change have low nitrite/ nitrates lighting is new and I have even tried cutting down on lighting hours to see if that helps , I cut down to 7 hrs/day, to now immediate avail. I haerd about a type of fish called a tiger cowry that eats this type of algae , from somebody on line but I don,t know anything about this fellow , how big, agressive, and it,s additional feeding habits, let alone where I can get one, If this would solve the green attack. What other choices do I have? Help.... Hawk

Hi

Just to clarify, a tiger cowrie is a type of snail. I have never owned one, but heard that it eats hair algae. Once the algae is gone, though, the tiger cowrie WILL starve to death. You should do reading on this type of animal before you buy it.
