What is ich?

What is ich?what causes it? how do the fish react?does it effect coral or inverts too?can it spred?(sorry im a beginner in diseases)

Ich is a parasite that infects fish that can lead to death eventually, it appears to be little tiny white dots, like grains of sand, on the fish,mostly on the fins and head area. Ich can be caused from a few things, stress, too much fluctuation in the temerature, and from other fish, its very contagious (sp?). It only effects fish, not inverts or anything. The fish may seem perfectly happy and not seem to notice the ich, thats why you have to examine your fish carefully. But as the ich gets worse they may start breathing heavily, or they may be sluggish. Porbablay ich is the most common fish disease.
