Here's a better video

the little critter has a tail, and appeared to be digging with it.

Nope, it's larger than that..
it has a striped back..yellow and black, same structure as a mantis shrimp..body size of a mysis shrimp, and a nasty little tail like the skeleton shrimp.

I tried to scoop the little critter out last night but it managed to escape into the sand bed.

Yes, it the antennas were at least as long as it's body. It appeared to be sifting through the substrate for dinner. When it found something it stuffed it in it's mouth sand grains and all.

I almost had it, but it disappeared into the substrate. Are there any mantis that have black and yellow stripes? The critter was maybe a half inch long.

No...they were more like ghost shrimp pinchers, and the tail was all wrong, it was much more like that of a scorpion....
I think I might have found a possibility,
the Tiger Prawn.

i know what that is!
thats a mole crab thingy.
there a crab type thing that burrow into the sand backwards i believe, like moles sorta. they can get a few inches big i think. i always thought they were sorta creepy, can't imagine actually finding one.
atleast it looks like it.
here is pics of older ones.

that could EASILY be a young one still developing it's shell. and stuff. but that looks and sounds to me what it is.

It is a gammarid amphipod, from the looks of it. Very common in our tanks.
Definitely not a mole crab, I'm afraid.

Thanks all
I feel tons better now...when I first saw it, late at night after the lights went out...my first thought was..MANTIS SHRIMP

I am leaning towards the gammarid amphipod, however, this little critter has the tail of the sand flea that Zeke posted.
I'm just glad it's not a mantis
