Depends on the type of lionfish....
ok, what kind of lions are safe with them?? We will be doing this tank so we can have both lionfish an eel and we would like to have at least three other fish that arent able to live in our reef tank...

In all reality a lion will eat anything it can fit in its mouth... Same thing with an eel... Except an eel will bite it into smaller chunks it it has a chance..Volitans get to be quite large...What kinda eel?

uhm we were thinking either the snowflake eel, tesselatta eel, or the barred moray, were pretty undecided at this point. We havnt even gotten the tank just yet. Were just doing all our research deciding exactly what we want so when it comes time to buy were ready and know exactly what we want.

Tessie grow to about 6 feet and will eat anything that is living with it. Dont want that. Id say a Fimbriated, banana eel or Dragon moray and a V.lion would be a cool ass tank!
If get a lion. You probably wont to aviod any puffers or triggers. They just dont mix well. People have done it but people do anything in this hobby. Like two yellow tangs for color or a smaller angelfish.

+1... I'd also add a snowflake to the list of suggested eels. IMO, they are some of the most striking eels but since they are common and relatively cheap most people want something more exotic.
As far as lions, if you go with a dwarf, fu manchu or antenna then you will have an easier time finding tankmates than with a volitan, which grows very large very quickly. IME, the shape of the fish you are putting in with a lion is very important. Long, slender fish like wrasses and parrots are relatively easy for a lion to go after. Flat, taller fish like tangs and angels are very difficult for a lion to get its mouth around.

My vote for you is a snoflake eel, a zebra (or other small) lionfish maybe a group of anthias, a dwarf angel , maybe a larger hawkfish, a smaller wrasse or a smaller (one that stays small) tang.
just do alot of research first,, of course, to find out what you like and the order it should be added when you start up after your cycle. Oh and did i mention a LOT of LR,,,
