What is the best thing to do?

When I bought my 100 gallon the guy gave me a skimmer. It is a lifereef brand skimmer - I think it is model VS2-24, but not sure. He gave me a pump a cap 2200 to go with it.
Now I have no idea how well this thing works. I have hooked it up, but I can't tell how good it will work until I get it hooked up to a saltwater tank. The fresh water just doesn't bubble. I am not sure how great the cap works. It keeps stopping.
So I am wondering:
1. should I go ahead and get a bigger pump for it - thinking a mag 9.5
2. get another skimmer (looking for a cheap one)
3. Just wait and see how it works once it is all hooked up to the tank?
What would you guys do? BESIDES go out and spend a fortune on the best thing out there.

Give it a try. Skimmers don't really work on fresh water tanks, so don't go by what you see it not doing there. Hook it up to the salt water tank and give it a whirl first.
