I went to the beach and this stuff washed up as the tide was going out. it has a spongy texture and appears to be about like the sponge tree things that they sell here on swf, except it's darker like a greenish/brown type color. I have it in a bucket of tank water. think it would be safe to put in the tank?

looks like a type of sponge to me, most sponges aren't the pretty orange and red we often see in the trade. i don't see it hurting your tank, even if it doesn't happen to live.

SC is a lot colder water than your tank. I wouldn't put it in mine.

Putting things from the beach into your tank is a great way to kill your tank. It can introduce pollutants and disease.

ive put a few beach crabs in my tank, and they are still alive 6 months later, but thats about the only thing i would put in my tank (from the beach) i also live in vancouver b.c. so i was very surprised the crabs lived.
and honestly i wouldnt even risk it, those sponges are pretty ugly, they look like sticks, no use killing off a tank for something like that.

Could be some kind of Gorgonia. I agree though, not worth the risk.
Off the subject, but dude, if I lived in B.C. near the ocean I'd be collecting something to eat those crabs... like Enteroctopus Dofleini.

first of all i think they are all dead. i put a 5 inch reef lobster in my tank, they were pretty small, about the size of a quarter, and they wernt as green as an emerald crab, but they were pretty green. and im pretty sure the lobster ate them, but any reason why you say i should get rid of them???

i doubt theyd be contaminated with anything, but in the first pick, theyre exposed to air. if they are sponges, they're gunna die.
