could be a mantis shrimp, pistol shrimp, or even crab shells banging on the glass at time. look in the tank with a red lens and see if you can find something in there when you start hearing the clicking noise.

Why a red light???
the red spectrum isnt as noticeable by most of the critters in the tank so they go about their normal buisness like you arent there if you put a white light the scurry in a hurry and you will never see them.

if they are small when you get them in the rock they can stay hidin for some time and then just start showing up I have heard of people haveing a tank setup for months and not know there was a mantis shrimp inthe tank

they use there front claws to smash things like snail shells and shrimp and even fish. they have a nickname of thumbsmashers cause they can realy hurt your fingers if they do attack you

Tis is what they can do, this was a small one in my tank about 1.5 inches long. Now imagine what it would look like if he was full growen or even 6 inches.
