WHAT IS THIS IN BacPak2??

Hi,
I was doing my monthly maintenance and I took my backpack2 off the back of my tank.. and HOLY SH+T!! It was growing all KINDS of gunk in it.. I called my fish guy and he said to leave it... He said it is beneficial to my biological filter.. I agree to some extent BUT.. There is SOOO much stuff growing in it... I DID rinse the insides and get the loose gunk from the bottom BUT I have NEVER seen stuff grow inside it... ANyone KNOW what all this stuff is... Mind you... I just got a couple of pics.. it is EVERYWHERE!!! Mayube that why I cannot get my TRATES down under 30!!!!
Please let me know what you think.. anyone else have this stuff in thier skimmer??

kim, I just cleaned my bakpak last week and I had the same stuff. I rinsed the biobale and removed a 1/4 of it and I also wiped the inside down but I couldnt get the botttom. My trates dropped 20ppm:eek:

every other month I take my bak pak off the tank and clean it completely!!! If you just leave the stuff there a few years from now the skimmer will be too clogged to work properly. I say clean it all up...in another month or two it will come back if you really want it!!!
