it's most likely Ick...Ick is a parasite that is very common. You will need to quarantine him...unless you have a fish only tank...then u could treat with a good ick medicine. If you quarantine him in another tank try hyposalinity...(get the salt level down to 1.009) Good luck.

You didn't do everything "by the book", or you would have quarentined this new fish before introducing him to your main tank.
Offer all your fish garlic soaked food for the time being to see if this knocks out whatever the problem is. Most like it is ick. If this re=emerges, then you can treat with hyposalinity---since you have a fish only tank, it will be no problem.
Fish only means, though, no inverts, live sand or live rock.

Beth, thanks for the repremand  !!! I was only looking for some help. What I meant by by the book is, I did everything that I was told to do. I am brand new to this hobby, obviously you are a seasond pro. Well anyway the spots have come bak again since this morning. I do not have a hospital tank so I was wandering if it would be o.k. to try the hyposalinity with my whole tank including the live rock????? Oh yeah what is the garlic thing, can I get it at my lfs???

Terry, I have a 60 galloon fish only with live rock. For filtration I have an emperor 400 and a bak-pak 2 skimmer. I treated last night with Marine-Max and Ick Extinguisher. The treatment was recommended by my lfs owner, he said that he has used it several time in the past.

Fish fool-
I feel your pain. Sometimes the folks here get frustrated with us new guys. I have tried to keep a Clown Tang twice, failed, and have decided not to try that species anymore because they are so fragile. The first thing you need to know about Ick is that every fish has it in them, but while they are healthy, their immune system keeps it under control. The second thing about ick, is that stress is causing it to attack your fish. You want to read Terry B’s 9 part posting on the “fish” board to get a better understanding of stress, I can’t cover it like he did so I will just refer you to him. Once you get the chronic stressors under control in your tank, your Tang will probably start to get healthier on it’s own, and that is what you really want. When you start adding meds to your tank, you really start to mess with the chemistry in a system that is already hard to control. Especially if your med had copper in it. You may be ok with a fish only tank now, but I all but guarantee when you start to see some corals and anemones online and in friends tanks your going to want them, and copper is a killer for them, even months after it is used. The garlic soaked food works, I’ve been using it for a month now, and haven’t seen any ick since I started. Just get some minced garlic from Walmart or something, drain the juice into a clean jar, and then thaw your frozen food in the juice. I keep my food in a spaghetti sauce jar I washed very well, filled ¼ with garlic juice, ¼ with R/O water, and put a healthy dose of vitamins in there. It is also a necessity to give your fish a variety diet, so in my “juice jar” I put frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and maga-marine variety fish food. The later has lots of algae and stuff the herbivores, like the Clown Tang, need. I then feed with a syringe several times a day. Finally your clown Tang needs lots of greens! I recommend getting lots of Caulerpa and starting a colony in your tank. It will feed you Tang, keep nitrates down, and oxygenate your water, it’s great stuff. Sorry for the long post, hope it is helpful.
