I love the look of a beautiful varied reef but I know I don't have the experience or the money to take care of one properly yet. I am going to try a FOWLR first.

I like the reef look. You can have fish, corals, inverts, almost everything in the ocean. I also like the fact that the coral grow and can take over a whole tank. It's my own little piece of the reef right home. Although I would like to get to Australia before all the reef is gone, nothing like seeing them in the wild.

reef. im not so into fish, i like the little inverts that arent the first thing you see when you look at the tank. a reef is art, when done right. my goal is of course to have a beautiful tank, but i also want to see something new every time i look at it.

We are just getting started with our 29 and I can see this is going to be a very long road ahead. fav. corals are pretty much any nice nice zoa, and fav. fish copper banded butterfly(gives me a reason to get a bigger tank, and beautiful)

Reef, Fish look the same day after day but your reef will continue to change everyday and you will see new things and new growth all of the time. I have had new things come out of my rock months after I have put it in my tank.

For the artistic aspect of the hobby, the reef is definitely the way to go. And as mentioned, you can have much more diversity in a reef.
For the "pet fish" aspect of the hobby probably FOWLR considering most of the larger aggressive fish tend to display a lot more interactive personality than your typical reef fish.

the reef is the most interesting. fish tanks are just that. tanks with fish circling.
a reef starts when you put your live rock in...then the creatures(you didn't pay for) show up out of the blue. then you put the corals in. these are living creatures, not plant life, and alot of them actually eat meaty foods. i mean...you could almost toss a sandwich in the reef and it will be consumed by the corals in a short time(exaggeration...but you reefers know what i mean).
then comes the fragging/propegation and selling of the frags. need i say more?

I'm really big on mixed reef. but am probably going to set up a FOWLR tank for some fish that wont go well with reef stuff, my girlfriend keeps wanting the most expensive rare un-reefsafe fishes possible, so I just might oblige seeing as she is going to allow me my multi tier frag tank.

Reef! reefs are fun at any size and are never done. FOWLR are only interesting in size XL and once its full its full.
