thanks. does it look healthy? the store owner said that he's been keeping it under PC's for 6 months, and that he's only ever kept clams under PC's or VHO's. i just thought it was really cool, ive never seen one that big in real life.

Assuming the white splotches are just the coloration of the clam, its possible with derasas. You can keep them under PC/VHO, but it has to be a very heavy wattage light for the size of the tank. Always best done under MHs.

he mentioned 4 watts per gallon of light, i think it was a 75 gallon tank, so about 300 watts i guess.

now im not sure, my mom said the tank might have been a 90. can you have 360 watts of PC in one fixture?

I would get another shot of the gills. Most clams that get that large, do NOT have the tentacles of their incurrent siphon touching, which is why a clear gill shot is good to get. Also, at that size, it's OUTCURRENT siphon usually should be blowing out water like a small powerhead. If you are thinking about buying it, the shop owner might be able to drop some small food behind the clam or use a piece of seaweed or something so that you can see if the outcurrent siphon is pushing water out.
Also, most of the time you can find a fixture with any combination of wattage that you want. 4 WPG (watts per gallon) is a generaly rule of thumb. On PC's you could probably go more 4-7 WPG for a Derasa.

We had one for 6 years under PCs. Then we we moved (12 tanks) he somehow got missed and left in a cold bucket without a pump. :-( He never made it out of the bucket. Still feel bad about that.

it depends on the look of the derasa. on average, about $150-200 for a foot long one. derasa can easily grow 3-5 inches per year. i got one 3 inches a year ago from here, now is a good 6-7.
