What kind of crab is this?

My lfs had someone bring in a bunch of live rock that came from a 480 gallon in the wall tank. I bought some and brought it home and when I was setting it up an big shell fell out of the rock and it started moving. I have many little hermit crabs but this thing is way bigger. About 3 inches. I have no idea what kind it is and if it is dangerous to corals or not. I have a golden clam, sea mat, and xenia in there now along with a emerald crab, lightfoot crab and anemone crab. Should i keep it in my tank or move it to the QT tank

I have no idea what kind of crap it is, but I'd say as a precaution you should move it to a QT or fuge until someone can identify it.

Qt/ fuge first, ID it, then decide from there.
We have a crab like that, great sand sifter, knocks frags over though, fugly though.

It's just a large hermit from the looks of the picture, I doubt it would go after corals but it is always a possibility if they are hungry enough. I will say though that this thing will go after smaller crabs and snails. If you like it keep it but you may have to restock your CC more often. If you don't like it take it to the LFS and see if you can trade it for some smaller hermits or something. Hope this helped.

it is a calcinus laevimanus and no i dont know this off the top of my head. its in me invert book. It says. common name is left handed dwarf hermit. It grows to 2 1/2" and it seems to me it will eat snails and sessile inverts. Hardy and grows quickly. So if u dont mind replacing ur CUC once in a blue moon than its ok. Not great but ok......IMO

+1 aka Large Zebra Hermit
They're harmless until they get larger like yours is. I'd get rid of it. They tend to kill snails just for the sheer fun of it.
