What kind of eel is this?

He is really skinny, kind of like a thin goby. He is about 10 inches long and was MIA for the last several months. I put him in the tank and thought something ate him until I noticed him sticking up out of the sand tonight... Anyone know?

Very cool-looking critter. Looks poisonous though. Sorry I can't help you identify it.
This is the closest thing I have found yet, the Brown Garden Eel.... so maybe your eel is of the Garden Eel variety.

Looks like Myrichthys colubrinus AKA the Banded or Harlequin Snake Eel from the Indo-Pacific. They get up to three feet long.
They like to bury themselves in the sand and they are harmless!!!!
That's my guess without seeing it in person. Looks like it is from the snake eel family whatever it is.

That's a Splendid Garden Eel (Gorgasia preclara).
My 90gal. will soon be home to 6 of them.
They're fairly rare and not seen too often, in the hobby. Where did you get yours?

I have heard that they are dificult to get to eat... any truth to that considering you have one?

I got him from my LFS in Port Richey Fl. I think he was $20.

My guess is no truth to that. I have had him for about 6 months and didn't see him for the longest time. I thought something ate him but suspected he was in the DSB. I will try to get som video of him eating. He seems to eat tiny particles if the green flake. My orange Banded Shrimpgoby seems to think he is cool. He was hanging out next to the eel while the eel was sticking out of the sand hunting for food.

Yeah, but I beat you out by also providing scientific name...off the top of my head.
