what kind of light should i have

One 40 watt? Not enough.
How about upgrade to 300-440 watts? <img src="graemlins//urrr.gif" border="0" alt="[urrr]" /> Whoa...I gotta to have a :cool: to relax my eyes! ;)

well i guess the 40 is nto enough so a 300 48 inch would be ok in the fowlr.....how much do they cost and how long will the 40 be ok

I don't know about FOWLR but 300 sould be way more than you need.
IMO on the other hand if it were my tank it would seem like 40 watts wouldn't be enough to see well enough. With the variety in bulbs I would go for 2 VHO. That would let you mix the colors around prety well to suit your own personal prefferances. You could probably get by with even less though.

the 40 watt lights up the whole tank well but is it enough it is a 48 ince perfect a lamp if that helps,it is in the canapy which came with the tank

I had 4-40W URI,S on a 75 before I got my new light and it worked great .2-Actinic Blue 2- Actinic white. :D

so i now have a 40 that came with the tank what should i get, the 40 lights up the whole tank,i will not have any corals

Without corals any light that allows you to see and imitates daytime for you fish is good enough.
If you have some extra money I would upgrade a little though. You would be in good shape to get a canopy with 2 48inc flos. One imitating white light, the other blue. This will allow the cool colors of you fish to show through. Even better is a hood with 4 flos, allowing two of each type of bulb. In my opinion, unless you want corals you dont really need very high output (VHO) flos.
