IMO it depends if your tank is set up yet or not. If it isn't, you can cover the top with plastic wrap and spray paint it with a couple coats of your favorite color. If it is already set up, you can use latex roll on paint. The latex will come off over time but the plus side is that if you get tired of the color, it will just peel right off and you can slap a different color on.

jam. use latex that way it's pretty non toxic and if you don't like the color you can scrape it off with a razor blade.just clean the glass with vinager and brush and roll on 2 coats!

I have one of those plastic black sheets on the back of my tank but I just painted the sides with black acrylic paint thats used for ceramics. The kind that comes in those one ounce bottles. I have live rock in the corners and there is a big opening behind them where the fish go to hide. I thought that maybe if I painted the sides of the tank black, it would give the fish a little more sense of security since they cant be seen. I didnt paint the whole side, just the outline of the rock where it meets the sides of the tank. I only gave it one coat so that light still seeps through.

thanks for the ideas guys.
the tank isnt set up yet. i'm going to but the paint later on today at home depot or wal mart. i was thinking of doing a couple of coates of flat black or like a blue so when the light is on, it wont blind the fish. my lfs said that the plastic that you tape to the back isnt a great idea because when water gets behind there, there's going to be a lot of bubbles.
