what kind of sand

I started my tank with live sand, worked well for me and I never really had any problems with the tank cycling. Just make sure you go slow with adding stuff if the tank is a new set up.

do i have to use live sand, or can i use a baged sand like say play sand, i have no lfs so i would have to ship the sand and would cost big.
just asking

Play sand and beach sand wont work. Play sand usually has a high silicate content which will be bad for phosphates and algea. Beach sand usually is fairly unleans sand, full of so much crap.
You dont need "live sand" but f you need to order it any way you might as well but it, it beneficial to your tanks "Cycle" Saltwater fish. COm offers nice sand

that makes sense, so i gueses that i will just have order a little at a time.
can you add live after the tank is up and running.

i know it sucks cost wise but its probably better to put it in all at once, maybe orer it in stages then once you have the desired amount start the tank, also you should have your rock in with the sand, your bottom rock should be on the tank bottom not in the sand, ( not a reqiurment but can help prevent a landslide later)

o yea have had landslides in the past
do not wont to do that. i also have 120lb. of dead rock from back in the day, from the 240gal it is just sitting in trashcans, bleach wite but it will work as base rock and then the sand so the rock will be on the glass

IMO you might wnat to cure that rock before you add it, clean off and dead stuff and put in some salot water with a powerhead for few weeks, once wet if it has a rotten egg kind of odor its not cured yet, doing this ahead of time could save alot of cycle time and other headaches once your tank is running.

thanks!!! that was the next ? i thank what is will do is as do water changes on the 75gal i will put the dry dead rock in that. should i put any light on it or just powerheads?

well that depends on whats in the 75 gallon, remeber rock can cause an amonia spike, or set off a mini cycle.
Light cant hurt but is not the most important thing.

What I did was order from a certain "***********" that offered free shipping on $100 or more purchase. The good quality LS is about $35 for a 40lb bag. If that doesn't put you past the $100 mark, then get a few other little odds and ends like heaters, filter socks whatever. Just to push you over the top. And if you cant find what Im talking about at that price, there is also a really good "Dr. Foster and smith" ^_^
You can use play sand, but your still going to have to seed it with a few cups of regular live sand from an established tank. IMO the color looks tacky so I don't really like it. And there are certain types to stay away form because they have chemicals int he play sand. So honestly its worth ordering the LS online.
Just do some shopping. For example: I found a 40lb bag of oolite LS for $90, 5 min later I found the exact same product for $40, now you can consistently get it for $35.
