Well,
I have a fish with live rock and some inverts. my question is, What kind of light system would I need for a reef set up?
I have an 80 gallon tank.

If it is a fish only you don't need a lot of light. A four tube normal florescent could do the job and allow you to mix and match tubes to get the color you like.
If you want to build a reef then you should look into stronger lights.

What size tank do you have?
For reef systems the better lighting set-ups vary between PC (Power Compact), MH(Metal Halide), and T5/T5HO. Everyone has different opinions on their lighting, so I'll chime in and say go with some nice T5HO's or mix it up with a MH pendant joined with T5's.

It's an 80gal.
The T5 is what I was looking at. Is there a certain amount of watts that I need in the bulbs?
Well I want to be able to have anemonies, polyps, and mushrooms.

If you want to keep anything (sps & anemones) then 400 to 500 watts would do the trink. If you want to keep most stuff just not the highend light users then something in the 300 watt range. T5 are an excellent choice as they don;t give off the heat PC'c do.

So then 400 to 500 watts should be enough? Are you guys sure that wouldn't fry my fish?
How strong are your guys' lighting systems?
