our neighbor has a coralife that sits on top. They seem to do well with it. They have an anenome and a few corals.

If you are looking into getting SPS and Clams I would get a Halide on there.
Personally I would go for a 250 watt 10k Metal Halide and 2 Actinic Supplement lights, either Power Compact or VHO. My vote would go to VHO.

It could be but you don't want to run just a MH all the time. The tank will get way too hot. You will have to use fans already to keep it cool. Usually the look of just MH isn't all that nice either. VHO will balance out the look.
If you were going to go with just a halide.......I would probably use one of the 20k Radium or 20k XM bulbs.

I had a 29 gallon with a 250w 10k bulb with 2 x 55 PC atinics. I thought that combo had really nice color. At first I had a 20k bulb that was a little too blue. Also, the 20k radiums are apparently not the greatest bulbs. After a few months under the 10k, my corals and clams looked amazing. As far as the heat issue goes, I had them about 8" off the water with a fan at each side of the hood and the temperature would only get to about 82, even in the heat of summer (I used to live in Albuquerque).
