I have a 55 gallon reef and i want to buy a skimmer...what do you all recommend? I am going to try and find it on ----. I dont have a refuigum so i guess this means i will have to have a hang on correct.
Thanks for you suggestions,

SuperDust,
I use a cheap skimmer on my tank (Sea Clone) that does just fine. You don't want to skim too much from the tank as well as not skim at all.

I use a Xcalibur; it is inexpensive compared to others, and it works well because of the length of the skimmer, the longer the contact the better; I also have a Berlin Hangon for back-up

I use a no name venturi skimmer.. It pulls the stink off of poop.. which may be too much.. but I would advise against a berlin style. the air pump is loud and I actually disconnected the one that I have.. it leaked and it was cheap and loud.. so I would rather do without one and have a low bio load than deal with it.. :D

My 55 reef was set up with a CPR BacPac 2r skimmer($129)......its now skimmerless....but the skimmer is on my 55 fowlr/ls and its still skimming away....for the money its a good quality product and the few problems I've had have been addressed at CPR's website......

I use the seaclone on my 55 as well and am very pleased with it.
If you are looking on ---- though I would caution about getting a seaclone as the odds are it will be an older model seaclone and will require modifications to make it work properly.
If there is a picture of the seaclone skimmer look at the center riser tube, if it is only a few inches long it is a newer model and will work great, if the center riser tube extends to the top of the skimmer it is an older model and it would be best to not purchase it.
Good Luck !!!
