What the heck is this

found this in my tank today not sure what it is not even sure if its alive never seen it before and does not appear to be moving but had to get up on the rock some how. its white furry and looks like a catapiller body but no legs about 2-3 inches long
any ideas?

Pretty sure that is a discarded clam foot. I wouldnt worry about it too much, but I would watch your clams closely. Sometimes it can mean a clam on the downslide, but other times they recover.

Hmmm, interested in the clam answer. There is also a worm called a "sea mouse" that is in the genus Aphrodita.

It's not actually the foot, which is the fleshy muscle the clam uses to position itselt and dig in the sand. It appears to be discarded byssus threads, which are the secretions from the byssal gland, located near the foot. The clam uses them to attach itself to rocks or other hard surfaces, and can release them if it is no longer happy with its location. The whole gland can be ripped out, too, if someone forcefully tries to move the clam. I think I used to have some pictures, I'll see if I can dig them out....
